Rudy Ray Moore (1927–2008) was a comedian, filmmaker, recording artist, and one of the great independent creators of the twentieth century.
Best known for his Dolemite character, Moore built his audience outside traditional entertainment channels, selling records, producing films, and creating opportunities for himself when none existed. His influence can still be heard throughout hip-hop, where he remains one of the most sampled artists of all time.
A new generation discovered his story through the 2019 Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy as Moore.
